GPDM

Gryphon Project Design and Management was established in 2003 as a consulting company specializing in building and interior design services, project coordination and property management.

The company was originally formed as a vehicle for providing consulting services in and around Thailand. Since its formation the scope of interests and area of operations have expanded. In 2014 GPDM for Sustainability was formed to provide international consulting services focused on a variety of projects that engage with relationships between design, sustainability and education.

The mission of GPDM for Sustainability is to support the development of a more resilient and sustainable society by using design strategies, systems thinking and Education for Sustainable Development principles to help clients find environmentally, economically, and socially responsive solutions to their needs.

Our Director, J. Scott Edwards, is a LEED Accredited Professional [ID+C] and EDGE Expert with more than 25 years of experience in architectural and interior design firms in Canada and South East Asia.  To see a selection of projects that Scott has been involved with in Asia visit the J Scott Edwards page under the Director tab.

...for SUSTAINABILITY

A sustainable society, from a sustainable development* perspective, is one that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (The Brundtland Report). In order for such a society to exist, the United Nations suggests that all four dimensions of sustainability – environment, economy, society, and culture – must be carefully considered in all decision making processes, from the everyday choices of individuals to the development of international policies. This requires a global citizenry that has awareness of the issues that the world faces; knowledge and understanding of how various systems affect and are affected by each other; critical thinking and problem solving skills; and, the capacity and disposition to take sustainable actions.

Design, sustainability, and education have tremendous potential for collaboration.

The act of designing requires the ability to apply multiple skill sets across several areas of concern.  Guided by a systems thinking approach that engages with all four dimensions of sustainability, design can work toward the goal of a more resilient and sustainable society.  When implemented as part of a larger vision about sustainable societies, sustainable design not only reduces the negative impacts of the built environment but also models the values of sustainability to its occupants and the broader community, helping people envision a more positive future.

A sustainable society can be achieved if its citizens successfully engage in sustainable behaviors.  Creative designers can model sustainable behaviors while inspiring and facilitating sustainable behaviors in others.

*Note: While in some fields the term may be controversial, for the purposes of this discussion “sustainable development” refers to local, national and international efforts to reduce poverty and promote lasting health and prosperity within the capacity of the Earth’s life support systems, as used by the UN’s Environment Programme (see here).

CONSULTING

Sustainable Design | GPDM for Sustainability provides consulting services either directly to Clients or to their Consultants.  Client goals and aspirations, function, budget, topography, climate, solar orientation, sight lines, accessibility, structural practicality, occupant health considerations, local availability of building materials, and local culture are all parts of interrelated systems that can have a significant influence on a building’s layout and appearance.  When projects are designed to address these factors while considering the environmental, economic and social impacts of different choices, the result is improved sustainability and greater fulfillment of the client’s needs.

LEED & EDGE Certification | Sustainable rating systems for new construction and building operations can be powerful tools, giving structure to discussions about sustainability and guidance on how to set and achieve sustainability goals.  Our consulting services cover full coordination of the LEED and EDGE certification processes including: project registration and interface with online submittal management systems; assistance with reviewing options and setting targets for credits to pursue; working with Designers, Engineers and Building Operators to ensure that the projects comply with LEED and EDGE criteria; managing information collection; and, completing all submissions for LEED and/or EDGE certification.

School Community Sustainability | Our Director is currently working with Compass Education to develop a school-community engagement protocol designed specifically to assist international schools with their efforts to establish an holistic approach to the topic of sustainability.  For more information about Compass Education please see here.

Our Director, J. Scott Edwards is a LEED AP [ID+C] and Edge Expert.  To see a selection of projects that Scott has been involved with in Asia please visit the J Scott Edwards page under the Director tab.
